Earlier this month, the iPhone 14 was launched during the Apple event. And now that the dust has settled after the event, it is time to do an iPhone 12 vs iPhone 14 comparison. The new base-model of iPhone 14 misses out on major upgrades but gets a boosted A15 Bionic chipset (which is also on iPhone 13 Pro model), a new Photonic engine for better image processing, car crash detection and satellite connectivity. However, unlike the iPhone 14 Pro-models, it did not get a new chipset, better cameras or the dynamic island. And if because of this, you are facing a hard time justifying the price of purchasing the iPhone 14, maybe you should look for cheaper alternatives. iPhone 12 offers a cheap alternative to those not impressed with the iPhone 14 price

While the starting price of the iPhone 14 is Rs. 79,900, the starting price for the iPhone 12 is Rs. 59,900. There is a clear gap of Rs. 20,000, not even considering that with the festive season coming up, on-sale price of the iPhone 12 is set to go down even further. But does this cheaper price come at the cost of performance? Not as much as you would expect, especially if you have never used an iPhone or have not upgraded in a while.

This is mainly because the 2020-launched device took a massive jump in terms of performance. It was the first entry-level iPhone to shift to an OLED panel instead of an LCD display. The 6.1-inch ‘super-retina' display is something Apple still continues to use in its iPhone 14 series. And shockingly, the display quality offers a lot even in today's market. Interestingly, the iPhone 12 has a better display resolution than the latest Samsung S22. The iPhone 12 has a resolution of 1170 x 2532 as opposed to 1080 x 2340 of the S22.

The A14 Bionic chipset also continues to hold its own and can comfortably multitask and run any game in the app store. And the jump of performance between iPhone 12 and iPhone 14 is not really two generations as the latter only gets an A15 Bionic. Also, iPhone 12 has got the latest Apple operating system, the iOS 16. So, while the performance difference would still exist, it would not discard the iPhone 12 as an alternative.

Finally, the iPhone 12 will continue to get software updates for the next two years at the very minimum, so your device will never really feel outdated and enjoy the new feature updates that Apple brings.

This is not to say that the iPhone 14 is not a superior device. It is. But the iPhone 12 is not an outdated device either. If budget is a constraint, it will offer a nice upgrade or entry to the Apple ecosystem.
