Samsung working on a double-folding flagship for 2021
The phone is likely to arrive later this year.
Samsung is betting big on foldable display smartphones. The company already has the Galaxy Fold series and Galaxy Flip series in its foldables lineup. Now, a new report says that the company is working on another foldable device that will come with a double-folding mechanism.
Nikkei Asia reports that the Korean giant is working on a double-folding smartphone that is likely to arrive as soon as towards the end of this year. The company has also filed multiple patents for a double-hinged design.
While the report didn't provide specific details about the company's upcoming foldable device, it did say that its screen aspect ratio is likely to be in line with the mainstream ratio of 16:9 or 18:9. This would ensure that apps run on it smoothly. It would also ensure that developers don't have to tweak their apps as per the company's new device.
The report quoting GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu said that Samsung has long planned to replace the Note series with foldable devices. "Samsung still has the edge over all of its competitors, as it produces these screens itself and has invested to research and develop such tech for a long time," Pu said.
Separately, Samsung has confirmed that it will not be launching a new Galaxy Note series smartphone this year owing to a global chip shortage. Instead, the device will arrive in 2022.
