Microsoft had promised to roll out timely updates for Surface Duo, a dual-screen Android device that went on sale in September last year. The company has so far been sluggish in keeping the phone up to date regularly. A new report now reveals Microsoft may finally roll out the long-awaited Android 11 update later this summer.

According to German website Dr Windows, Microsoft and Google have intensified their collaboration on tweaking Android for dual display devices such as Surface Duo. Google is also interested in this as it believes the changes will help other OEMs working on dual-screen devices. The “additional development work” may have been one of the reasons for the delay in update to Surface Duo, adds the report. A separate WindowsCentral report also reiterates the summer timeframe for the Android 11 update.

A Slashgear report points out that the timeframe is rather large as the update could come early or as late as September. Google by that time will have unveiled the Android 12 iteration.

Surface Duo: An overview

Microsoft had first showcased the Surface Duo in 2019. The device also marked Microsoft's return to the smartphone space. Interestingly, Microsoft used Android for the dual-screen device over a mobile version of its Windows OS. The device launched for $1,399 ( 1,01,600 approximately).

Microsoft Surface Duo has two 5.6-inch OLED displays with Gorilla Glass layered on top. The displays can be stretched out to form an 8.2-inch PixelSense Fusion display. It also supports stylus for illustrating or taking notes.

The Surface Duo comes with an 11-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. The camera comes with features such as low light optimisation, HDR, 7x zoom, 4K video recording and electronic image stabilisation.

For performance, Microsoft's Surface Duo runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 256GB built-in storage. It has two batteries with a capacity of 3,577mAh each.
