Comic relief on your phone

Momics — comic books that you can download on your mobile phone — have youngsters excited.

Now you can read and see Ben 10, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Dexter and your other favourite comic book characters on your mobile phone. Mobile operators are set to launch Momics, or mobile comics. A mobile comic is a reduced version of a comic book; a 40-page comic book that is condensed to about 15 slides.

Mobile operators such as Airtel, Idea Cellular, Tata DoCoMo, Aircel and Vodafone have lined up to provide Momics to their subscribers. Idea Cellular has tied up with ACK Media, the owners of Amar Chitra Katha, and digital content provider Mogae.

"Comics as a property make up for a large piece of overall entertainment pie. And using momics is as easy as downloading a song or a joke," says the spokesperson of Bharti Airtel, that has tied up with publishing houses. "We've tied up with Raj Comics, Amar Chitra Katha, and Tribune Media Service to name a few," he adds.

Reactions to momics are mixed. Meenakshi Sharma, a lecturer, says, "Youngsters will be glued to their mobiles now." Sudhanshu Tiwari, a hotel management student, says, "Now I can read comics anywhere". Rajesh, a lawyer, says, "It'll be nostalgic to have comics on the cell, as we hardly buy comics now. This'll be refreshing."
