In a blog post dated October 29, Windows and Devices Group executive vice president Terry Myerson confirmed that all devices with Windows 7 and 8 will be automatically updated to Windows 10 over the coming months.

In a two-step process, Microsoft will firstly change the update to "Optional", then, in early 2016, to "Recommended", which means any users with "automatic updates" enabled on their device will have Windows 10 automatically downloaded without permission being requested. Although the upgrade will be automatic, Myerson explains that "after any upgrade, you can easily go back to your prior version of Windows within 31 days if you choose."
