Sony mobiles to support PlayStation 4 games
The latest line of top-tier mobiles from Sony, the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact, will be able to stream console games directly from a PlayStation 4 on the same WiFi network.
The latest line of top-tier mobiles from Sony, the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact, will be able to stream console games directly from a PlayStation 4 on the same WiFi network.
Annouced at the annual consumer electronics show IFA Berlin on the evening of September 3, the Z3 line will also be accompanied by a Game Control Mount accessory that lets the devices clip on to a PlayStation 4 controller.
The Remote Play capability, a feature of the PlayStation Vita gaming handheld, will remain exclusive to the Xperia brand as far as mobile devices are concerned.
Integrating Remote Play in this way enables Sony to boost the utility and relevance of both PlayStation 4 and the Xperia Z3 line to game fans, mimicking the Wii U console's tablet-style GamePad and Off-TV Play feature, and offer a gaming application in contrast to Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 and Gear VR setup.
The notion that the Z3s will be able to offer second screen capabilities for PlayStation 4 games also runs as a nice counter to the Xbox's SmartGlass feature.
The move makes sense of Sony's August 6 withdrawal of support for the PlayStation Mobile program, which focused on easing the publication of games on both PlayStation Network and Android.
With the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet having only debuted in February 2014 at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress, and arriving at retail over the next six months, no release date has been attached to the Z3s as of yet.
Nevertheless, Sony's European online stores have been able to attach prices to the new range of flagships, with prices starting at €379 for the Z3 Tablet Compact and rising to €699 for the Z3 smartphone, dependant on territory; T-Mobile bagged US exclusivity, having started carrying a $599 Z1S earlier in the year.
