Apple moves away from Intel, launches 5nm-based M1 chipset for MacBooks

Apple kicked off its Mac event by launching Apple M1 chipset for Mac devices. The company says its new octa-core processor has eight core GPU and delivers up to 2 times graphics performance as compared to PC chip. It has a 16-core design for Neural chip and has a Secure enclave for privacy. This comes in addition to Advanced image signal processor and 16 billion transistors. What’s more is that it is made using 5nm process.

The firm even claims that its apps like Safari, Photos and more performs way better with M1 in Mac devices. Safari in particular is said to be two times faster. It is possible to render 3D animations and edit 4k videos with ease. Apple says you can even colour grade 6K videos using M1’s power. In terms of security, ARM-based M1 Hardware-verified secure boot, high encryption and more. Apple says it has optimized all its apps for M1. GarageBand, iMovie, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro and other such apps are claimed to perform faster as well.

As for Universal Apps, Big Sur will feature apps in Mac Store that works on both current Intel chip-based Mac and on M1-based Macs as well. Developers can also transition their apps for M1 Macs through Rosetta platform. It also makes it possible to run iOS and iPadOS apps on your MacBook.

The firm launched three new Mac devices with M1 chipset - new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. While the Air is priced at $999, the Mac Mini and MacBook Pro cost $699 and $1299 respectively.
