Apple Silicon chips for Mac devices to go in mass production soon

At this year’s WWDC conference, Apple announced that it will start using its own silicon to power future Mac devices. One of the first products is expected to launch later this year as well. However, now it has been reported that the chip production for the Silicon Mac is set to begin on time in the Q4 of this year. These will be 5nm chipsets that will be manufactured by TSMC. 

“Apple will kick off its 5nm wafer starts at TSMC for its new Apple Silicon processors starting the fourth quarter of 2020, with monthly output estimated at 5,000-6,000 wafers,” states the Digitimes report.

Also mentioned is that the number of chips per wafer can vary based on the size of the chip and the diameter of the wafers. Although there’s no official name given to the chipset, it is being tipped as Apple A14X.

There have also been reports stating that Apple could debut its A14X chipset with the refreshed version of the 12-inch MacBook. The report coming from China also stated that Apple discontinued its Intel-based MacBook earlier this year, which makes the launch time frame of the ARM-based MacBook really suitable.

Apple has reportedly said that the entire transition from Intel to ARM will take a couple of years, which means by 2022 there will be an ARM version of every MacBook.

While rumours point towards 12-inch MacBook to feature Apple’s silicon, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo states that  a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and a new 24-inch iMac might be the first to get apple Silicon. We will get to know more later this year.
