Details on ‘MetaOS’ revealed, to work as a foundation for Microsoft 365 service

Microsoft seems to be working on something called as ‘MetaOS’. This was leaked sometime back but details were not out. However, ZDNet seems to have some leads on it this time. The OS is said to deal with Microsoft Teams, Office, Edge and other platforms. The team, which is being headed by Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Vice President of the Experiences and Devices Group Kirk Koenigsbauer, is reportedly working on the MetaOS inbox apps and services.

MetaOS is said to be made for the people and might not be restricted to certain devices. The firm is also said to follow Tencent’s WeChat social/payment service with MetaOS. “Microsoft wants to create a single mobile platform that provides a consistent set of work and play services, including messaging, voice and video, digital payments, gaming, and customized document and news feeds,” adds the report.

Also mentioned is that Microsoft’s MetaOS has different tiers. The lowest one has a data tier which is there in Office substrate and/or Microsoft Graph. The report states that this tier will focus on ‘network identity’ and ‘groups’. This comes in addition to Fluid Framework, Power Apps and Visual Studio team

It is supposedly working on a set of common inbox apps and controls including products like Planner, Stream, Tasks, Lists, Files, Whiteboard, Notes (OneNote, Sticky Notes), analytics, learning, history, downloads and more.

So what all this means is that Microsoft’s MetaOS is supposed to be a foundation layer of Microsoft 365 service for both business and end consumers.
