Ever wished Apple iPads to run macOS? YouTuber makes it a reality

Apple has been promoting its iPad tablets as the future of computing since quite some time, touting its power and how it works as a laptop when used with accessories. However, according to some critics, the iPadOS is still pulling it back to some extent and is not as good as macOS when it comes to computing. So, if you are one of them, a video showing macOS Catalina running on an iPad might cheer you up as it brings a bit of a hope that iPads can indeed run a desktop software in future and can make the entire device even better.

The 38-minute long video posted by YouTuber Yevgen Yakovliev shows the entire process how it is possible to run macOS on an iPad. However, it’s definitely not easy and only those with some technical know-how can be able to do it. What’s worth adding here is that the OS (which is made for Intel-based Macs) has not been ported to A12Z processor. Instead, the YouTuber is using an app called UTM that uses x86 emulation.

If you have done this before, you might be knowing that this is a common way of using UTM to run macOS on an Apple iPad. However, what’s different here is that until now, UTM supported software only until macOS X 10.5 Leopard. This is the first time we are seeing it run macOS Catalina.

But you can’t use it as it is full time yet. The OS is too slow and booting up itself takes a few minutes.

However, what it does prove is that if Apple wants, it can bring macOS to iPad. The question is, if it will ever do it? Considering iPadOS is one of the newest OSes in the Apple ecosystem, the company might not kill it anytime soon. Instead, it can keep improving the OS and bring more macOS features to it. The macOS might stick with Mac devices only.
