India now has two of world’s 100 most powerful supercomputers

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) last month announced that it will be commissioning India’s largest HPC-AI supercomputer called Param Siddhi - AI. Now, word is that India’s newest (and fastest) supercomputer has entered the elite list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

Global information technology service provider Atos today announced that PARAM Siddhi – AI has been ranked 63 on the TOP500 ranking. This makes it India’s largest and fastest Supercomputer.

To give you a quick brief about India’s fastest supercomputer, PARAM Siddhi – AI has been built with NVIDIA DGX A100 Systems connected with NVIDIA Mellanox HDR InfiniBand Network, C-DAC HPC-AI Engine, AI Software Stack and Cloud Platform. It offers a performance of 4.6 petaflops sustained and 210 AI petaflops.

This supercomputer has been established under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), which is an initiative by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It will focus on researchers pertaining to academia, MSMEs, industry and start-ups encompassing all the areas of artificial intelligence including natural language processing, surveillance and image processing, automotive industry, healthcare, robotics, computer vision, recommender systems, education, agriculture, space, defense and national security.

Notably, PARAM Siddhi – AI isn’t the only Indian supercomputer in the Top100 list. Mint reports that Pratyush that is used for weather forecasting was ranked 78th in the list.
