Intel discontinues 8th-gen Coffee Lake processors

It is natural for companies to slowly kill its older products with new ones entering the market. That’s what Intel is doing now. The chipmaker has announced that it will be killing the 8th-gen Coffee Lake CPUs this year. As mentioned in the PCN (product change notice), the 8th-generation Core desktop processor family will be discontinued until the Intel Core i7-9700K processor. The mix also includes the company’s Pentium Gold and Celeron processors based on the 14nm Coffee Lake. Interestingly, the firm is not calling it quits for the Coffee Lake-based Xeon processors that are mainly used for handling data centre loads.

As per the list, the entire lineup has been discontinued from June 1 (this month) with suppliers and OEMs getting their last chance to place orders until December 18.

However, the 8th-gen Intel chipsets are not the only ones that will be reaching their end of life. Intel will also be discontinuing Compute Sticks and NUCs that use the same generation processors. However, these will be discontinued later in the year.

Intel discontinuing 8th-gen processors is understandable given that it already has 9th-gen processors in place and available to the masses. More recently, it introduced 10th gen Core S-series desktop processors as well.

The processor comes with some new overclocking enhancements including new overclocking knobs and refreshed Intel Extreme tuning utility with graphical enhancements and new feature support. The firm is also using the Thin Die STIM or Solder Thermal Interface Material to keep the processor cooler than before.

The new and powerful processor by Intel also includes the company's Turbo Boost Max Technology v3.0 that identifies the best performing core to deliver increased performance.
