You may have to wait longer to see a commercial rollable phone.

Oppo recently showcased Oppo X 2021, a concept smartphone with a rollable screen. The company, however, has no plans to offer a commercial release in the near future, reports Android Authority.

The company said that the concept smartphone would act as a guide for a “transformation” and “evolution” of its future form factors.

“Commercialisation requires market research and business justification, and may take some time,” Oppo added.

Oppo had showcased X 2021 at its recently held Inno Day. The rollable phone comes with a 6.7-inch display that can be stretched from the side to become a 7.4-inch display. The unique form factor is said to be another alternative to what is increasingly becoming a monotonous design for phones.

In the last couple of years, we have seen an influx of foldable smartphones. At least two foldable designs are commercially available – one that opens like a book and another flip-style design.

Apart from foldable phones and rollable phones, companies such as LG are also experimenting with swivelling design. LG’s Wing has launched in India for 69,990, much cheaper than the foldable phones. The Wing is part of LG’s Explorer Project that aims to bring out more innovative design in the smartphone space.

Interestingly, LG is also working on a rollable phone. Expected to debut in March 2021, the phone codenamed B Project “will allow one of the sides of the front screen to be pulled to have the screen roll out to become a larger screen.”
