AirTag car theft solver? This man just got his stolen Range Rover SUV back

Is there an AirTag car theft solver feature? Well, for all intents and purposes, there definitely is, for this man at least. Apple AirTags have been in the news lately for some nasty reasons when they were used for stalking purposes by miscreants. But this time, Apple AirTag has proved to be of immense help as it led a man to find a lost object- a huge Range Rover SUV! A report by Apple Insider reveals that a man from Canada used AirTag trackers to locate the SUV, which was later recovered by police. But not before learning a costly lesson.

A month ago, Lorne, the owner of the stolen Range Rover from the Avenue area of Toronto, Canada lost his SUV. Later, he bought an identical unit of the SUV to replace the lost vehicle, as the lost SUV was never found. This was because the thief had already displaced the owner’s wallet and smartphone of the family members from the car before driving off in an attempt to prevent tracking. The thieves were able to disable the tracker installed by the manufacturer in the car, the report quoted Lorne as saying.

Much wiser after his loss, Lorne planned to put as many as three Apple AirTags in the new Range Rover SUV: one in the glovebox, the second one inside the spare tire, and a third under the back seat. A week ago, on June 22, he woke up to the news that his second SUV too was stolen!

This is when the Apple AirTags came unto their own.

He used Apple’s Find My app to follow the lost car. Thanks to the Apple AirTags, he found his SUV near a metal recycling plant in the nearby Scarborough district. He approached the Police station immediately, and soon enough he was informed that his car has been found along with several others! Notably, the AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected through Apple’s Find My app.

While this case has definitely grabbed headlines, the actual purpose of the humble Airtag is to keep a track of personal items such as keys, wallets, purses, or luggage. Perhaps, thanks to Lorne, the gadget may have just found an alternative use- that of a car tracker.
