Samsung's flagship Exynos 2100 successor might sport that long-rumored AMD GPU

On Tuesday, Samsung unveiled the Exynos 2100, their flagship processor that is expected to power this year’s Galaxy S series and probably the Note series that follows it. Clearly the company’s most powerful processor by far, the Exynos 2100 is expected to close the performance gap with its closest rival, the Snapdragon 888.

We have already reported that the Exynos 2100 will use ARM cores instead of Samsung's custom Mongoose cores, which should deliver CPU performance similar to the Snapdragon 888 which is made up of the same structure - one Cortex X1 core, three big A78 cores, and four smaller A55 cores. The only area that the Exynos 2100 is expected to lag behind is in the graphics department with the Mali G78 GPU.

However, on Tuesday, Samsung revealed that its next flagship processor might replace the Mali GPU with the long-rumored and long-awaited AMD GPU, according to Samsung leaker Ice Universe on Twitter.

According to the leaker, it is ‘almost certain’ that the next Samsung chipset could be available as early as this year under the hood of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which would certainly be an exciting prospect.

The presence of an AMD GPU on top of Samsung’s decision to drop its custom cores could very well create problems for Qualcomm, which currently sits at the top of the chipset pyramid for Android phones.

The 5nm Exynos 2100 itself is a significant upgrade over the older 7nm Exynos 990, bringing up to 10 percent higher performance while using 20 percent less power. It also has an integrated 5G modem that supports downlink speeds of 5.1 Gbps on sub-6GHz 5G networks, and 7.35 Gbps on mmWave 5G networks.
