The highly anticipated role-playing video game (RPG) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was one of the most searched for products over the past seven days, appearing three times in Google's top ten product-related search terms.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, or simply 'Skyrim,' was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and released on November 11 (arriving December 8 in Japan) across PC Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The game is characterized by the non-linear gameplay found in the Elder Scroll series, character development and the game's large open world. Players are free to explore the game's world, take on side quests and develop various forms of relationships with the game's multiple non-playable characters.
Skyrim follows on from, but is not a direct sequel to, the fourth installment in the Elder Scrolls series, Oblivion, and was one of the most hotly anticipated games of the past few months. It received a Metacritic rating of 95/100, was awarded a perfect 10/10 by Wired and was described by Joystiq.com as 'the deepest, loveliest world ever created for a single player to explore.'
Data from Google Insights shows that in the category Products, 'Skyrim' and associated terms appeared three times in the top ten ranking of search terms with the biggest increase in growth over seven days prior to November 16.
The data shows that the majority of these terms originated from the United Kingdom, United States and Germany, peaking in terms of frequency on the date of release -- November 11-- after which searches remained constant until beginning to decline on Sunday, November 13.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available to purchase via Amazon.com and other retailers for around $60 (PC version). According to industry tracker VGChartz over 3.4 million copies of Skyrim were sold in the two days after its release, which would make it this year's second fastest-selling video game.
Other popular search terms over the past seven days included the generic 'striped sweater dress,' household items 'bedding sets' and 'slow cooker' and Amazon's iPad rival, the 'Kindle Fire.'
