WWDC 2020: Apple reveals iOS 13’s big adoption success

Ahead of its annual developer conference, Apple has revealed that the iOS 13 is now running on 92% of iPhones launched in the last four years. Mere 7% of iPhones are running on iOS 12.

Apple further revealed that 81% of all devices run on iOS 13. About 13% of devices run on iOS 12. Similarly, iPadOS 13 is running on 93% of all devices introduced in the last four years.

The stats reveal Apple’s successful efforts to keep all iPhones, new and old ones, running the same iOS versions. The OS distribution also shows a stark contrast with Google’s which faces a fragmentation issue of its software.

Apple had launched iOS 13 in 2019. The software was compatible with iPhones as old as the original iPhone SE. Other compatibles phones were iPod touch (7th gen), iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

If reports are to be believed Apple’s upcoming iOS 14 will be running on all the iPhones that were compatible with iOS 13. If true, iPhones as old as iPhone 6S may also have the latest iOS.

That being said, Apple’s success rate with iOS adoption is mainly because the company has a tighter control on its ecosystem. In comparison, Google offers Android to many OEMs making them available on ultra-low-cost smartphones. While this helps Google push its Android userbase, it also faces a challenge in the form of rolling out all of its new features and security updates instantly.
