You can now set Gmail as default email app on iOS 14

If you are an iPad or iPhone user and your primary email service is Gmail, there’s some good news for you. Google has just released an official update to the Gmail app that allows it to be set as default on Apple dev, devices that have iOS 14.

Apple’s latest OS update, iOS 14, was released last week and brought in the option for users to set a third-party email application (like Gmail) as default for iPhone and iPad. As long as your Apple device has the latest software, you will be able to set Gmail as your default email app. However, the last mile was up to developers to add support for the feature, which Google has done for Gmail via the latest update.

Once you have updated your iPhone or iPad with the latest software, and have the latest update on Gmail, you can head over to the ‘Settings’ app and select Gmail menu to find the newly added “Default Mail App” menu.

Google says that the Gmail app itself should prompt users with instructions once they have updated it to help them set it as default.

The Verge reports that iOS appears to have a bug that automatically switches third-party browser and email applications back to Apple’s Mail and Safari after a restart. Apple is yet to address this issue or speak about a fix.

Google has “fully embraced” Apple’s new options for default apps and the company is adding support for Chrome to be set as the default browser on iOS 14 as well.
