Got an issue with your iPhone 12’s earpiece? Apple will repair it for free

Apple has announced a new service program for all iPhone 12 series smartphone users who are facing an issue with their device's earpiece. The company via an update on its support page today announced that all the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro users who are facing issues with their smartphone's receiver wherein the device does not emit sound from the receiver when they make or receive calls are eligible for a repair.

The iPhone-maker said that it ‘had determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro devices may experience sound issues due to a component that might fail on the receiver module.' Of course, we don't know what Apple means by ‘very small percentage' since it had used a similar phrase while describing issues with its now-extinct butterfly keyboard. However, it is safe to assume that the numbers are few since very few people are complaining about it on Reddit and on Twitter.

Now, if you are using the iPhone 12 or the iPhone 12 Pro smartphone and you are facing issues with your phone's earpiece, you will be eligible for a free repair if your smartphone was manufactured between October 2020 and April 2021.

Now, an interesting bit. While all iPhone 12 smartphones are still under Apple's one-year warranty, the newly announced service program covers the affected iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro devices for an additional two years after the first retail sale of the unit.

Here's another piece of information that you should know before you give your faulty iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro for a repair. If your iPhone has a cracked screen, it will be repaired prior to repairing the earpiece. “If your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro has any damage which impairs the ability to complete the repair, such as a cracked screen, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the service. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the additional repair,” Apple wrote on its support page.

This means Apple will repair the screen before fixing the earpiece even if you are okay with using the slightly broken screen. And while fixing the faulty earpiece might not cost you anything, fixing the broken screen will cost you a lot.

Furthermore, Apple says that “your iPhone will be examined prior to any service”. This will be done to verify if the issue persists owing to a faulty component or due to the owner's fault. If it finds out that the earpiece was damaged due to the owner's fault, it won't be offering any free repairs. The good thing is that this free repair program is available in countries across the globe, including in India.
