2/5 For the first time since the launch of iPhone X, Apple has heavily revamped the design of the iPhone. The iPhone 14 Pro features an all-new notch with a punch hole and pill shaped cutout in front housing all the sensors as well as the front camera. (Apple)

3/5 The iPhone 14 Pro is powered by Apple’s new A16 Bionic chipset which offers blazing fast performance while maintaining high energy efficiency. Last year’s A15 Bionic was already the fastest processor in the market and the new 4nm A16 Bionic will strengthen iPhone’s position as the fastest smartphone in the market yet. (Apple)

Apple just announced the iPhone 14 at the September 7 launch event last night and one thing becomes evident – the iPhone is largely outdated when compared to the Samsung flagships of today. Apple announced the iPhone 14 along with the iPhone 14 Plus as the two vanilla variants of the phone, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer the bigger upgrades. It is, however, the iPhone 14 that will interest more people this year and based on what Apple revealed yesterday,

And sadly, the changes are minimal when compared to the iPhone 13. Yes, the iPhone 14 Plus is the “new change” this year offering a bigger display and a larger battery capacity, but iPhone 14 in general offers almost the same basic specs as the iPhone 13. In fact, there are a couple of aspects where the iPhone 14 loses out to the Samsung Galaxy S22, Motorola Edge 30 Pro, and Xiaomi 12 Pro.

iPhone 14 outdated specs that annoy us

Still a 60Hz display

Yes, this is sad. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus continue to stick to 60Hz refresh rate in a world where 120Hz refresh rate smartphone displays are standard. Certainly, Apple knows its customers are content with 60Hz displays but when the world has moved over to faster displays, why should Apple continue to offer dated specs on its phones that cost upwards of 80,000?

That notch looks old

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus still get the display notch for holding the camera and the Face ID sensor. The notch looks ugly and dated in 2022, and Apple could have given the iPhone 14 the same wide pill shaped solution as the iPhone 14 Pro. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra only has a tiny camera cutout in comparison.

Old processor

The A15 Bionic chipset in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus comes from the iPhone 13 Pro. This is a one-year old chipset and despite it being fast and efficient, you are still getting an older processor. Only iPhone 14 Pro buyers get to enjoy a modern and faster A16 Bionic chip.

Only dual cameras, that too with 12MP sensor

iPhones optimise their camera sensors well despite the lower megapixel count. However, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are unable to offer any meaningful magnification, or zoom. Maybe if they got the 48MP sensor from the Pro model, they could have gotten 2x zoom. Samsung's Galaxy S22 in comparison offers a useful 3x optical zoom camera.

Super Slow charging

Rumours suggested a faster 30W charging on the iPhone 14 but Apple continues to stick to its 20W wired charging on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. This makes the iPhone 14 probably the slowest charging flagship phone you can buy today. Even Samsung offers a faster 25W solution, while Chinese brands have moved on to 80W and even 120W charging.
