Nothing Phone (1) could be a smartphone difficult to buy just after its launch. No, not due to component shortage, but Nothing founder Carl Pei wants to do a rerun of the early sale system he did at his previous company, OnePlus. Pei in a newest video shared by Nothing confirms that the Nothing Phone (1) will undergo an invite system for its sales. Hence, you will be able to buy the phone only if you manage to get an invite from someone to buy the phone. This limits the smartphone to a select few just after launch but helps with the hype the company wants to further in the coming days.

Observed first by XDA, the video confirms the invite system for the Nothing Phone (1), which is highly reminiscent of the invite system OnePlus used back in 2014 for the OnePlus One. In the video, Carl Pei explains the reasons they went with the invite system for the phone – stock management.

Nothing Phone (1) to get invite system

Pei says that Nothing is still a small company and doesn't have the resources of a big company to have millions of devices ready at launch. They had two options with the phone – delay the sale of the phone while creating the stocks, or sell the units as and when they come off the production line. The latter idea sounded better and hence, Nothing goes ahead with that.

Pei even goes on to say that the Nothing ear (1) earbuds gave them a lesson last year – the earbuds didn't have any invite system, which led to stocks getting sold out faster than they anticipated and hence, Nothing could only sell them once a week. With the Phone (1), they did not want history to be repeated.

While that is an interesting reasoning, it simply plays into Nothing's hands for continuing the hype around its first smartphone. Nothing has relied largely on hype since its beginning and it needs that more than ever for its first smartphone. The recent bidding for the first 100 units on StockX, and revealing the phone via YouTube creators have only proven the same.
