Reliance Jio 5G phone, JioBook laptop to launch at AGM: Report
Reliance Jio is reportedly planning to launch its first 5G phone, and laptop at this year's AGM.
Reliance Jio is expected to launch two new products at this year's Annual General Meeting (AGM). The products in question include Jio's first 5G smartphone and the rumoured JioBook laptop. Jio is working with Google to develop its first low-cost 5G smartphone.
Reliance is expected to complete the development of the 5G smartphone by May-June, according to a report by ET Telecom. The launch will possibly take place later around August-September during the company's AGM, the report added. Jio's 5G smartphone is said to run on Google's Android Go OS that is present in low-cost smartphones. But the company could use a custom Android OS called JioOS for the 5G phone. This is something that hasn't been finalised yet, the report added.
"The development of the phone is on track. The specifications have been finalised. However, there are ongoing discussions on the operating system, given that it will require deep integration of Jio services," ET Telecom quoted an executive as saying.
Google announced its partnership with Jio on developing affordable 5G smartphones for India. A Bloomberg report stated that Jio and Google's Android smartphone will cost around ₹4,000, and the company plans to sell 150 million to 200 million of these phones in over two years.
The rumoured JioBook is also expected to make its debut at the AGM along with the 5G phone. In terms of specs, the JioBook is said to feature an HD display, and it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor paired with Snapdragon X12 4G modem. The laptop could come with 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage. It will also feature a mini-HDMI connector, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
