Microsoft is ending Mixer, does that mean Xbox Series X is getting Facebook Gaming? It’s possible

While the rest of us were caught up with the announcements Apple was making at WWDC 2020, Microsoft made one of its own. Microsoft is going to shut down Mixer in July and redirecting all traffic to Facebook Gaming.

Speaking to The Verge, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer said that this move was going to help gamers get more of what they want to see, more seamlessly. Spencer added that they were struggling to keep up with YouTube and Twitch.

Spencer said that they had started far behind with Mixer and it was hard to catch up with bigger players, like YouTube and Twitch, when it came to monthly active viewers. He believes that the Mixer community will benefit from the broad audience Facebook has and their ability to reach gamers seamlessly through the social media platform.

The transition is going to happen on July 22 when all Mixer streams will be redirected to Facebook Gaming and Microsoft says that all their existing partners will be able to move to Facebook Gaming immediately and be granted partner status with Facebook’s Level Up Program.

There is a trade-off here though. Facebook will begin implementing Microsoft’s xCloud game streaming service on Facebook Gaming and eventually they will enable PC gamers to jump directly into any game that they are watching the stream of. And this could also mean that the Xbox Series X is going to use Facebook Gaming since Mixer is essentially gone.

With Mixer gone, there was a question about what is going to replace it. Mixer has been integrated into the Xbox One for two years now and it seemed like that would carry on in the Xbox Series X as well. Now, things are going to change.

Microsoft’s new partnership with Facebook hints at the possibility of Facebook Gaming replacing Mixer on the Xbox console and it also indicates that Microsoft might eventually partner with YouTube and Twitch.

The best-case scenario would be for Microsoft to support all game-streaming services so gamers have an option every time they hit the share button on the Xbox Series X.
