The Apple AR/VR headset is happening as soon as late 2022! If the latest revelation from renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is to be believed, Apple is on track to announce its first mixed reality headset by Q4 2022. Along with the launch date, Kuo also reveals some of the internal specifications that hint at a very powerful computer inside.
Kuo says that the Apple AR/VR headset will rely on a dual processor system for its mixed reality experiences. The main high performance processor is said to be as powerful as the Apple M1 chip that power the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. The second processor will be used for dealing with sensor data.
This mixed reality headset will be treated as a standalone device, like the MacBook and iPhone are, i.e., it won't need an iPhone or a Mac to work. Hence, it could theoretically be used even by those who do not have an iPhone.
Apple is said to be stuffing this mixed reality headset with two 4K resolution OLED micro-displays that will be manufactured by Sony. There will be eight optical modules to aid the video-based AR services; i.e., for the cool through effects.
And, along with the usual AR stuff, the Apple mixed reality headset will also be able to handle VR content. There is no clarity on what kind of content will go in VR; we expect some VR games and probably the support for Apple TV+.
These are all early leaks and hence, we suggest you digest these with a pinch of salt. If the Apple headset ends up being anything like the leak describes, it could be among the most expensive mixed reality headsets to buy. Previous rumours have suggested a possible price range between $1,000 to $3,000.
