DJ Mixes, as Apple explains, will have “long term monetary value for all creators involved”, a “seemingly impossible feat until today”.

As many DJs and music enthusiasts would tell you, many creators behind DJ mixes go unacknowledged and uncompensated, with all the royalties going to others instead of the people actually involved. Apple Music, with some help from Shazam, has figured out a way to solve this. Apple has created a new process, in cooperation with major and independent labels, via which rights holders within a DJ mix can be properly identified and compensated.

Apple calls this, well, DJ Mix. DJ Mixes, as Apple explains, will have “long term monetary value for all creators involved”, a “seemingly impossible feat until today”. Apple has developed a new tool, building upon Shazam’s technology, that will allow Apple Music to identify all the individual creators involved with making a particular DJ mix including artists behind the music in the mix. And they will all be appropriately compensated.

To make this process better, Apple is also working with DJs and the suppliers of DJ Mixes including clubs, festivals, promoters, curators, and independent labels so as artists can be correctly identified and compensated fairly.

Apple Musics already has a whole lot of DJ Mixes on the platform that you can listen to right now and they are adding more regularly. The latest addition on this list is Studio K7!’s DJ Kicks archive of mixes that got added last week. Studio K7! joins a larger collection that includes tracks from Honey Dijon, Amorphous, DBN Gogo, DJ Clue, Dam Funk, Funk Flex and more, added during Black History Month. Boiler Room mixes were onboarded last August when Apple Music Radio was launched.

And that’s not all, Apple Music is also going to be home for DJ Mixes coming in from Tomorrowland, Mixmag’s archive of mixes along with new content, content from French livestream platform Cercle, and mixes from Charlotte de Witte, Belgian DJ and record producer.

"Apple Music is the first platform that offers continuous mixes where there’s a fair fee involved for the artists whose tracks are included in the mixes and for the artist making those mixes. It’s a step in the right direction where everyone gets treated fairly. I’m beyond excited to have the chance to provide online mixes again. There’s a different approach to it compared to playing a peak time set in a club or at a festival. It enables me to, without any limits, offer an insight into my music collection,” said De Witte.
