Elon Musk slams OpenAI-Microsoft exclusive deal for GPT-3 language model

Elon Musk is not pleased with OpenAI’s exclusive deal with Microsoft. Musk had co-founded the AI research firm in 2015. The firm aims to make its AI work accessible to everyone.

"This does seem like the opposite of open. OpenAI is essentially captured by Microsoft," Musk said in a tweet.

Earlier, OpenAI had granted an exclusive license to Microsoft for GPT-3, a language model created by the AI research firm. The GPT-3 is also said to be the largest and most advanced language model in the world. The autoregressive language model helps deliver human-like text. It also clocks in at 175 billion parameters.

“We see this as an incredible opportunity to expand our Azure-powered AI platform in a way that democratizes AI technology, enables new products, services and experiences, and increases the positive impact of AI at Scale,” wrote Kevin Scott - Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft in a blog post.

Scott also revealed that the GPT-3 is trained on Azure’s AI supercomputer.

It is not the first time Musk has been critical of OpenAI or AI in general Back in February, Musk clarified that he had not been involved the AI firm for more than one year.

"I had to focus on solving a painfully large number of engineering & manufacturing problems at Tesla (especially) & SpaceX," Musk said on why had to leave the organisation.

As said earlier, Musk has been one of the biggest critics of Artificial Intelligence. Addressing a conference at MIT in 2014, Musk had called AI as the "biggest existential threat" and compared it with "summoning to the demon." Musk has also warned that a race for AI technology could lead to result in World War III.
