Microsoft Edge is going to become blazing fast after an upcoming Windows 10 update

Microsoft is testing a new feature called the ‘start-up boost’ that could help increase the speed at which Edge launches from the Windows 10 desktop or taskbar.

This speed boost will be achieved by activating select Microsoft Edge processes, as TechRadar explained, when a Windows 10 machine is powered on. With some of these processes already running in the background, “using up minimal computing resources”, the browser will be in a “state of readiness that should improve launch times”.

This start-up boost feature is available as an option in Edge version 88 already. Edge version 88 was recently released to the Microsoft developer channel but a stable build of this version is not expected to be rolled out till mid-January.

Early users can activate the start-up boost via Edge settings and admins will be able to put in a blanket policy for all devices that are running the compatible version of the browser.

The latest Windows 10 update makes the Edge browser more tightly integrated into the operating system. This makes it faster, sure, but it also means that it’s impossible to uninstall the browser following traditional methods. This could frustrate some users who do not want to use Edge, but on the other hand, it paves the way for improvements like the start-up boost.

As per the Microsoft Q&A, the start-up boost will be available to all Windows 10 users but Microsoft might withdraw it from some devices that “do not see expected positive impact”. Microsoft has also warned that since they are in the “process of experimenting with the feature, so it may be a little while before you see it in your respective channel and build”.

Over the last few months, Microsoft has been quite upfront about its ambitions for Edge which is now the company’s flagship browser. All the more so since Microsoft has pretty much killed off Internet Explorer. Users of the now-defunct Internet Explorer will be redirected to Edge automatically when they visit certain websites. Another update has also seen Edge being ‘force installed” into some user devices.

Microsoft has added new upgrades to Edge as well like a secure password generator, a built-in price comparison tool, screenshot feature and a scrolling tab bar.

As per reports, Edge still has a meager share of the overall market (2.16%) as compared to Google Chrome (66.34%), however, its userbase has more than doubled since June and Microsoft is hoping that recent improvements will help it gain back users lost with the death of Internet Explorer.
