Apple and Samsung had been locking horns over who makes the better smartphone. While Apple had taken to the courts to have a dig at Samsung, Samsung itself has been making those advertisements showing its smartphone as the better one. That fight may have been dumbed down but an Apple executive has now made a statement that may ruffle Samsung’s feathers. In a recently release documentary on the 15 years of the iPhone, Apple Marketing Chief Greg Joswiak has called Samsung smartphones as a “poor copy” of the iPhone.

The documentary made by The Wall Street Journal shows the Joswiak talking about the iPhone in general. When asked how Samsung’s competitiveness affected Apple in the early days of the iPhone, he said, “[Samsung was] annoying. And they were annoying because, as you know, they ripped off our technology. They took the innovations that we had created and created a poor copy of it, and just put a bigger screen around it. So, yeah, we were none too pleased.”

Apple’s Greg Joswiak comments on Samsung

It is unknown whether Joswiak is referring to the current or past Samsung smartphones. The Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices in the early years were essentially iPhone lookalikes with a similar home button layout. However, that’s where the “rip off” tag ends as Samsung offered a vastly different OS and some niche features that never made it to the iPhone, such as the S Pen stylus on the Samsung Galaxy Note devices.

Additionally, Samsung itself has been responsible for driving innovation into the smartphone market lately. It is Samsung, not Apple, that sells foldable smartphones at various price points. The concept of an in-display fingerprint sensor was popularized by Samsung, which is still to be adopted by the iPhone. And don’t forget about the notch, which Samsung never implemented on its Galaxy S devices.

As for the iPhone, Apple itself has been enlarging the display size over the years. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were the first examples of Apple increasing the display size, and the current iPhone 13 Pro Max is among the largest and bulkiest smartphones in the industry. Apple also makes the iPhone 13 Mini as its last modern interpretation of the compact smartphone but we all know it is going to be axed this year.
