I want to buy a branded printer priced between 2,500 and 4,000 and low cost cartridge. I’ve heard that inkjets cost a lot of money in the form of refills or replacements. I will be printing black and white prints only.

HP's Deskjet 1000 (also called J 110) comes within this price range. It prints colour, but the cartridges are relatively cheap. For black and white prints, a laser printer suits better, but they cost about R6,500. They are also more economical per page printed. You would also need to find if the cartridges etc are easily available locally. In this aspect, HP, Canon and Epson are easily available across the country, so it would be easy for you to get parts and servicing.

I am looking for a budget tablet with a high-resolution display for showcasing pictures to my customers. I do not wish to buy the Apple iPad and I am not in need of a 3G connectivity option. Please suggest. —Amitabh Manchanda
Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, available in two screen sizes of 7" and 8.9", is an option with a starting price of R15,999. Other choices include tablets from Huawei, Lenovo and Asus. Since all these tablets run on the Android operating system, you will be able to download content off a memory card, unlike an iPad, which would come in handy for you to make your presentations.

The Kindle Fire is relatively better built than the other models mentioned here, and its Android OS is customised by Amazon.
