Tech Wrap: Mitron app, WhatsApp scam, Microsoft-Jio and more

Reliance Industries’ Jio Platforms has been bagging deals after deals. And the latest to invest in it could be Microsoft. US President Donald Trump also caused a racket on Twitter after the company said it will fact check even his tweets.

More tech news of the day includes India’s alternative to TikTok called “Mitron'' developed by an IIT Rourkee student. Instagram also announced that it will start pumping ads into IGTV. Then we got to know about a new WhatsApp scam.

Microsoft Jio investment

Microsoft is reportedly negotiating an investment in Jio Platforms which is estimated to be around $2 billion. The software giant would be buying over 2.5% stake in Jio Platforms with this investment. After Facebook, this would be another tech giant investing in Jio Platforms.

Twitter vs Trump

US President Donald Trump has unleashed a war on social media after Twitter announced it will fact check his tweets. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey however stood his ground and stated that the platform will “continue to point out incorrect or disputed information about elections globally”.

India's TikTok app

So there’s a new TikTok rival in town and it’s called “Mitron”. The short video app has already garnered over 5 million downloads on Google Play Store. It also has a rating of 4.7 stars. With TikTok facing backlash in India, this couldn’t be a better time for a homegrown app like Mitron.

IGTV ads

Instagram will start showing ads in IGTV starting next week. This will be first tested with a small group of advertisers and creators. Yes, creators will benefit from this too as the ad revenue will be shared with them. Instagram already shows ads in the feed and ono Stories.

WhatsApp scam

There’s a new WhatsApp scam that asks users for their verification code. This message comes from an account claiming to be WhatsApp’s technical team. It asks the user to verify their identity by sharing the six-digit verification code. The hacker appears genuine but note that WhatsApp never asks for codes, not in this way.
