Fortnite may shift to Unreal Engine 5 on September 12-14, 2021. (Epic Games)

Popular battle royale game Fortnite developers recently revealed their plan to shift the game to Unreal Engine 5. Fortnite will be moving to the next-gen gaming engine, and it had even entered the Early Access mode back in May, according to a report by RealSport101. A promininent leaker HYPEX on Twitter was the first to break the news. It was also revealed that the game's reported shift to the new engine means that mapmakers should now learn how to use the engine early in case mod support is announced.

Currently, the game uses Unreal Engine 4, and since the developers Epic Games owns Unreal Engine 5 the move isn’t at all outlandish. But the leaker did say that the major changes that may come as a result of this shift may not be felt in the main battle royale arena itself. It may be seen in the creative modes. Aside from these changes, the players and industry at large are expecting huge visual improvements to happen. Players may even get graphical upgrades such as improved lighting, details, and more frames per second, according to DualShockers.

When will Fortnite shift to Unreal Engine 5 happen?

The change is reportedly going to take place on September 12-14 of this year, during Fortnite’s transition to the 8th season, version 18.00. So far, no official announcement has been made about it nor has any reason been given as to why the shift to the new game engine is happening. The most obvious speculation is the fact that since Epic Games owns Unreal Engine, including EU5.

How much of Fortnite will be changed?

Fortnite game isn’t going to undergo a complete graphic overhaul anytime soon. One thing that is likely to happen is that supported hardware like NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, 3080, and the new 3090 and AMD Ryzen 6800, 6700 and 6600 will deliver enhanced performance along with better visuals.

Who may get it first?

Owners of AMD Ryzen CPUs and Radeon graphics cards are likely the first in line for getting these benefits. As far as PS5 and Series X/S consoles are concerned, they may expect performance enhancements soon thereafter.

Superman and Suicide Squad skins

Among some more changes that are coming to Fortnite are new Superman and Suicide Squad skins as well as a big-name anime crossover. This is likely to happen in time for Season 8. Bloodsport may become available in in-game store on August 3, 2021. It will be followed by the Superman skin, but that does not have an actual release date yet, Dexerto revealed.
