Microsoft starts testing Dolby Vision for Xbox Series X, Series S titles with limited gamers

As promised before, Microsoft is finally bringing Dolby Vision HDR gaming to its latest gaming consoles - Xbox Series X and Series S. However, right now it is limited to certain users only and is a part of a testing process. This feature was recently noticed by some users, as mentioned by Forbes, when they enabled the latest Xbox Insider Alpha ring release (2104). For now, this feature is supported only on a few games including Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Halo: Master Chief Collection and Wreckfest. As mentioned in the report, the users said that Dolby Vision picture quality was more ‘refined’ as compared to HDR10. This is being said due to the dynamic data that adjusts HDR on a frame-to-frame basis.

Microsoft Xbox has itself confirmed to Forbes that it is indeed testing Dolby Vision for the consoles. It has also said that this feature is coming ‘soon’ but has not yet given a particular timeline. However, it seems like the feature will be coming this year itself nonetheless. “As we announced last year, we’re excited to be bringing Dolby Vision support for gaming to our new Xbox consoles in 2021. The feature is currently in testing and we’ll have more to announce on general availability timing and functionality soon,” said the company in the statement.

It is worth adding that while Xbox Series X and Series S come with Dolby Vision support, the rival PlayStation 5 is limited to HDR10 only. However, it might not be a dealbreaker. You would also need a compatible TV and supporting games to get the best out of it.
