“This will be a Transformers game unlike any other, an AR game where you’ll get to team up with the likes of Bumblebee and the Autobots in the real world, powered by the Niantic Lightship platform,” Niantic explained in a blog.

Niantic also shared screenshots of Transformers: Heavy Metal game where we can see Autobots like Bumblebee go up against Decepticons like Skywarp. There are also different cards for actions like jabs that the players can choose during their battles. Transformers: Heavy Metal will be like other Niantic AR games as it is based on the company’s Lightship platform. This software enables AR apps to use real-time 3D mapping and also multiplayer social experiences. The screenshots also show a Pokemon Go like environment in what looks like a battle between the Autobots and Decepticons.

Niantic hasn’t revealed which countries will get the beta version of the game first but a global launch is confirmed for later this year. The company has a dedicated website for Transformers: Heavy Metal where interested people can submit their email addresses to get updates on the game. Alternatively, one can follow the game’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube pages to get the latest updates.

Niantic is working on more AR games including a Pikmin app that will be based on the puzzle-solving series by Nintendo. This is the first project from Niantic and Nintendo’s long-term deal to develop AR apps. Pikmin is also slated to release later this year.
