A cartridge of Nintendo's classic video game "Super Mario 64" set a world record on July 11, 2021, selling at auction for $1.56 million. The sale, the first ever of a game cartridge to surpass $1 million, came just two days after a sealed copy of "The Legend of Zelda," made for the old Nintendo NES console, sold for a then-record of $870,000. Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, which handled both sales, has not identified the buyers.  (AFP)

We’ve heard about vintage games fetching millions of dollars at auctions in the past, but this latest one has broken all records. An unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 game was just sold for $1.56 million, that’s about 11 crore, on Sunday. As Heritage Auctions in Dallas informed, this 1996 Super Mario series game has broken the record for the price of sale for a single video game. The bigger question is though - who bought it? Well, we don’t know that yet.

The Super Mario 64 was the best-selling game on the Nintendo 64 and it was also the first game to feature the Mario character in 3D, as Heritage Auctions pointed out in its statement. This massive auction follows the sale of an unopened copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda that was auctioned off for a price of $870,000 ( 64,807,170 approx). Heritage Auctions’ video game specialist Valarie McLeckie said that they were shocked to see a game sell for more than $1 million just two days after they sold The Legend of Zelda game for a record price.

And that’s not all, Heritage Auctions sold an unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. that was bought in 1986 and the buyer then forgot all about it and left it in a desk drawer. This game sold for $660,000 ( 49,164,060 approx). Another unopened copy of the Super Mario Bros. also sold for $114,000 ( 8,491,974 approx) in an auction. The Super Mario Bros. copy that sold for $114,000 was a part of the collection of video games from the 1980s and the 1990s. Games from this collection have been bought by various people for nearly $700,000 in all. Heritage Auctions had expected they would make roughly $500,000 for these games.
