With Pebblemon you can play the classic Pokemon game on the Pebble smartwatch

Pokemon, Nintendo’s iconic game series, made its debut in Japan two and a half decades ago. It then went on to become very popular across the globe and has since spawned many other versions of the game that can be played on various platforms and devices. One of them is Pebblemon, designed and developed to be played on the Pebble smartwatch, and as its developer describes it - it is a “mini Pokemon adventure on your wrist”.

Now, Pebble smartwatches are another story. Fitbit bought the brand in 2017 but some people still own Pebble smartwatches and use them as well. Game developer Harrison Allen, the guy behind the Pebblemon game, has said that he’s created a replica of the graphics that were used in Pokemon Yellow, the first title of the popular game series. And just like it is on that game, you can explore various areas of the Johto region and play Pebblemon using the buttons on the Pebble smartwatch.

Pebblemon has all the 251 Pokemon from the Game Boy Color (GBC) title and once you level up you get to unlock more of those pocket monsters. “Discover hidden items to aid you on your journey,” Allen states.

Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, posted a video on Twitter that shows Pebblemon running on a Pebble smartwatch without glitches. "5 years on and developers like linksky are still building new game engines and beautiful games like Pebblemon for Pebble. Incredible," Migicovsky wrote. The 31-second video on the tweet shows a Pebble user complete a stage with the help of the two buttons on the right side of the smartwatch. "This is basically a full port of the GBC version of pokemon btw,” Migicovsky said in another tweet.

The video Migicovsky shared brought back Pebble smartwatch memories for a lot of people with one former Pebble user (@bleesham) tweeting - "One of the best open watch platforms ever. I miss it, and having direct access to all of the sensors via BLE. Another user, @GeekyLuigi, said, "So perfectly stupid, I love it."
