WhatsApp messenger service has launched a trial for a feature that will allow users to break free from their smartphones. In a first of its kind development, WhatsApp users will be able to send messages to friends, family, colleagues without their smartphones. It will run in trial mode till all the glitches are removed from it. The company said that the new WhatsApp feature can be used on multiple "non-phone" devices (PCs, tablets etc) and there would be no need to connect to this messenger app and yet users will still be able to use it. The company's blog post said, "With this new capability, you can now use WhatsApp on your smartphone and up to four other non-phone devices simultaneously - even if your phone battery is dead." Will Cathcart in his comment on Twitter said, "Our multi-device capability immediately makes the experience better for people who use desktop/web and Portal. And it also will make it possible to add support for more kinds of devices over time." (WABetaInfo)

This will be a huge step forward from the current status in which WhatsApp can be used on "companion devices," such as computers. However, it is enabled through the user's smartphone. Once the smartphone is offline or battery has drained, it will stop working. Apart from that, if the signal on the smartphone is weak, WhatsApp disconnects and has to be restarted by going through the entire process again. (MINT_PRINT)

"Each companion device will connect to your WhatsApp independently while maintaining the same level of privacy and security through end-to-end encryption that people who use WhatsApp have come to expect," the blog said. Notably, WhatsApp rival Signal has had this feature for a long time. It needs the smartphone at the time the user logs in, but not thereafter, to send messages. (WABetaInfo)
