Is 5G harmful? We have had environmentalists and celebrities raising voices against induction of 5G networks into our lives. While the next generation networks are suspected to hurt living beings in many ways, it is now proven that they CAN hurt aircraft! In fact, it can hurt enough to pose flight risks across the world. Airlines have already started cancelling several flights in the US where 5G networks are being deployed.

Based on internal findings from Boeing, it seems that 5G networks can mess around with the flight telemetry of the Boeing 777 aircraft. This can cripple the aircraft’s sense of height, which is something you do not want to go wrong after it takes off, or before landing. As a result, several Airlines across the world, including India’s Air India have pulled off the Boeing 777 aircraft from those routes where 5G networks are deployed.

5G vs airplanes: What has happened

For this, you need to understand how 5G works. 5G, like all other forms of radio communications, relies on electromagnetic waves to aid exchange of data. While previous generation networks used lower frequencies, 5G uses the higher 3.5GHz and higher frequencies to aid communication. These kinds of waves have largely been limited to security scanners and medical grade devices.

Hence, the rest of the world’s communication systems that were built years ago did not take into account mobile communications reaching such high frequencies of airwaves. Now that it is here, it is found to hurt aircraft operations.

Due to the nature of the EMF waves, it has been found that 5G airwaves can mess up aircraft equipment that is crucial for safe operations. While most new generation aircraft have been proven safe, the decades old Boeing 777 widebody aircraft faces trouble.

How 5G hurts the Boeing 777?

With the Boeing 777, it has been found that 5G networks can cause interference with the aircraft’s altimeter. This device is crucial for reading ground height while landing/takeoff as well as help the automated landing systems. A messed-up altimeter can make landings risky for this wide-body “mini jumbo” jetliner, especially in the event of bad weather at the airport.

In several US cities where 5G networks are deployed near the airports, airlines have concerns after Boeing’s warning to operators and the authorities. Hence, some of the world’s biggest airlines are either cancelling Boeing 777 flights or assigning other aircraft. Given that the Boeing 777 is deemed the aviation sector’s workhorse, this piles up the losses.

Affected airlines include Emirates, ANA, JAL, Air India, British Airways and a few others.

However, not all aircraft are deemed disabled by 5G. Popular wide-body jets such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 787, Airbus A380 and a few more have been deemed fit to fly into airports with 5G networks airwaves.
