Dating apps usually know a lot more about us than we think they do, and one of India’s most popular dating apps has put that information to good use with less than a week before Valentine’s Day. A study by Bumble across the country found that one in three people was looking for a serious relationship this year, while one in five was looking to get hitched.

We get it, last year was tough in more ways than one - not only did the global pandemic cut off our chances of meeting friends and family, but many were also pushed into ‘digital’ relationships while virtual dating took a front seat. This was all in the name of safety, of course. But as we've reported before - cities like Delhi also saw the highest number of breakups this year.

But now that the national lockdown has slowly been lifted across states, people are keen on meeting friends and significant others, after months of being apart. Single Indians are also looking to meet new people, which is why Bumble has enabled the ability to specify what sort of date you’re looking for - virtual, socially distanced, or relaxed. Users can also specify whether they want to meet in crowded places and want the person they are meeting to wear a mask.

Bumble says that the study was conducted across the country between December 2 and December 10, but did not specify the sample size. According to the survey, 38 percent of users hoped to see themselves in a committed relationship while 22 percent wanted to get married this year. Almost 73 percent of single people surveyed said they travel within their city for a couple of hours to meet someone they met online - Pune (37%), Kolkata (33%) and Chennai (32%) had the largest number of singles ready to do so. Meanwhile, 19 percent said they would go to another city.

“As we enter a new year, there is a sense of optimism and hope amongst single Indians as they get more intentional about finding love in 2021. We’re seeing that our community is becoming more and more excited about the prospect of dating in real life again. Women in particular are making more empowered dating choices centred on them and their needs. This Valentine’s Day we are excited to see how our Bumble community celebrates, either virtually or IRL,” said Bumble India’s Samarpita Samaddar.
