Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year confirmed that WhatsApp users will get a great feature in the form of multi-device support later this year. Over the span of past few months, reports have detailed the progress that this company is making in implementing this feature. Now, a new report says that WhatsApp has started rolling out the multi-device functionality to select users.

WABetaInfo reports that the Meta-owned messaging app has started rolling out the multi-device functionality to WhatsApp users. However, the catch is that this is for those who are using WhatsApp beta for Android versions 2.21.23.10 and 2.21.23.

WhatsApp timeline

The blog site says that WhatsApp started rolling out a new feature that allows using WhatsApp on linked devices without an active Internet connection on your main phone almost three months back. In the first month, beta testers could join the Multi-device beta to use WhatsApp on up to four linked devices and one smartphone at the same time. After some time, beta testers that used stable versions of WhatsApp could try multi-device as well. However, not all beta testers could use the feature at the time. Now, WhatsApp has started rolling out the multi-device functionality to all Android beta users running version 2.21.23.10 of the app.

Notably, the feature was available to some beta testers using 2.21.19.9 of the app. Now, WhatsApp has removed the option to opt out of the multi-device beta program. The row “Multi-device beta” has disappeared, which means that the users who have opted in for this feature cannot leave the multi-device beta program anymore.

However, for those not on beta, WhatsApp had this to say, “If you didn’t join the multi-device beta, and the changes are applied to your WhatsApp account too, this update logged out all your linked devices, so you can relink them again using multi-device, which has been automatically enabled for your WhatsApp account.” This was revealed in a WhatsApp blog, which added that the feature was also being rolled out to some people on WhatsApp beta for Apple iOS. However, only a limited number of iOS beta testers have access to this feature at the moment. A wider rollout is expected to follow soon.

WhatsApp contact information

In addition to this, WhatsApp has started rolling out a new contact info UI to select the users of its Desktop beta app. As of now, the contact information user interface on WhatsApp Web includes a search bar along with a menu that gives users the access to options such as muting notifications, exiting the group and selecting messages among others. Now, WhatsApp is changing this interface by adding call buttons for video and audio calls to the mix. In addition to this, the messaging app has also added “Incoming Call Ringtone” and “Turn off all desktop incoming calls” controls for the users. giving you more control over call notifications. For business accounts, it has added a new interface for Contact Info, Business Info, Group Info.

This interface is similar to the one implemented on WhatsApp beta for Android and WhatsApp beta for iOS. The blog site says that the new notification options and the new interface are rolling out for people that are using the latest update of WhatsApp Desktop beta.
