AWS announces second AWS region in Hyderabad

Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Friday announced the launch of its second AWS region in India. Amazon operates AWS Mumbai Region in India. Today the company announced the launch of the Hyderabad Region in India.

The new AWS Asia Pacific region in Hyderabad will comprise of three availability zones (AZ) in India. This is in addition to existing three availability zones that are a part of the Mumbai Region. The newly launched Hyderabad Region will join the existing nine AWS Regions and 26 Availability Zones across Asia in India, Australia, Greater China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore. 

For your reference, availability zones are the data centers wherein all the data is hosted. Amazon says that its availability zones comprises of one or more data centers that are fully isolated from one another not just in terms of the infrastructure but also in terms of the geographies. However, they are connected via metro fibre.

Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security and is connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks. AWS customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones to achieve even greater fault tolerance. 

Coming back to the newly launched Hyderabad Region, Amazon says that this region will address the long-term capacity needs in the country and it will provide more flexibility to customers for storing their data. The Hyderabad Region will be available to customers starting mid-2022.

Amazon says that the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region will provide customers with even lower latency across southern India. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of Indian organisations will have additional infrastructure to leverage advanced technologies to drive innovation.

"Together with our AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region, we’re providing customers with more flexibility and choice, while allowing them to architect their infrastructure for even greater fault tolerance, resiliency, and availability across geographic locations,” Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President of Global Infrastructure and Customer Support, Amazon Web Services said on the occasion.

Notably, the announcement comes less than a month after the company announced a partnership with NITI Aayog to launch its Cloud Innovation Centre (CIC) in India. The NITI Aayog Frontier Technologies Cloud Innovation Center is the company’s first CIC in India, the 12th around the world, and the first AWS CIC that will address societal challenges at a national level while working with a governmental agency.
