Today, August 4, is shaping up to be a monumental day for astronomy enthusiasts. Four major rocket launches are expected to take place throughout the day. The highlights include Elon Musk led SpaceX rocket launch which will use its Falcon 9 rocket to kickstart the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter mission for South Korea and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin which will launch the NS-22 space tourist flight to mark its sixth space tourist flight since the company began crewed launches. Alongside Rocket Lab is launching a small spy satellite for the US government and United Launch Alliance will be sending its sixth and last Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit satellite (SBIRS GEO 6) to space. American aerospace manufacturer and launch service provider Rocket Lab was scheduled to launch NROL-199 spy satellite for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). This is a classified mission so the purpose of the satellite is not known. This launch has successfully taken place at 1 AM EDT (10:30 AM IST), according to a report by Space.com. ULA is conducting its sixth and last launch of the SBIRS GEO 6 satellite. The satellite being launched is for the Space Force's Space Systems Command and the launch will take place from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The rocket launch will take place at 6:29 PM EDT (3:59 PM IST). A live stream of the launch will begin 20 minutes before the launch. You can watch the webcast on the official ULA mission page.
The NS-22 space tourist flight will take off on the Blue Origin New Shepard rocket today. This will be the sixth space tourist flight for the company. This mission will also mark the 22nd space mission for the Jeff Bezos space company. The launch time is scheduled for 9:30 AM EDT (7:00 PM IST) and you can watch the livestream directly on YouTube using this link. The stream begins at 6:20 PM IST.
Finally, Elon Musk led SpaceX is also going to conduct a rocket launch today. The Falcon 9 rocket will be sending the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter mission to space for South Korea. This mission will send an orbiter to the Moon to study various magnetic anomalies of our natural satellite. It will also be looking for launch sites for future South Korean space missions. The launch takes place at 7:08 PM EDT (4:38 AM IST on August 5).
