BSNL enables 4G connectivity in Atal Tunnel

The newly built Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh is fully equipped with 4G connectivity powered by BSNL. The state-run telco has installed three 4G base transceiver stations (BTSs) in the tunnel for its customers to use 4G as they pass through it.

Prior to the tunnel’s inauguration, BSNL Himachal Pradesh tweeted the announcement. The telco said it’s team worked “day & night in 0 degree temp.” to install the 3 4G BTSs in the tunnel at a height of 13,051 feet. BSNL was also asked to provide its telecom services when the foundation stone of the tunnel was laid.

BSNL has been running its 4G SIM upgrade programme in areas where its 4G services are rolling out. BSNL customers who are on 2G and 3G SIMs can upgrade to a 4G SIM free of cost. Those in Himachal Pradesh can also avail the scheme. BSNL has been offering 4G through its 3G spectrum in parts of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Kolkata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Atal Tunnel on October 3. The tunnel is 9.02 km long making it the world’s longest tunnel. It is built under the Rohtang Pass which is located on the Leh-Manali highway in Himachal Pradesh. With the new tunnel, the distance between Manali and Leh has been reduced by 46 km and travel time by 1.45 to 2 hours. It also clears the journey of possible road blockades or avalanches. The tunnel has been named after former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had first announced the project back in 2000.
