In this tech-driven world, live telecasts and web telecasts have become the norm, but a live twittercast is taking live coverage a step ahead. In a rare case of social media and medicine joining hands, a US hospital live tweeted an open heart surgery with regular Twitter updates, photos, videos and interaction with followers.
'On Tuesday, Dr Michael Macris performed a double-coronary artery bypass on a 57-year-old patient. Dr Macris' colleague, Dr Paresh Patel, provided 140-character updates throughout the procedure and answered questions submitted by followers of the hospital's @houstonhospital Twitter account,' Mashable reported.
Dr Patel tweeted graphic medical procedures and explained the crucial methodology involved in the surgery at the Houston's Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital.
Some of the tweets said, 'Dr Macris is placing a hole in the aorta for the proximal end of the saphenous vein #mhopenheart' and 'Dr Macris has located the other diseased vessel and is sewing end of the saphenous vein to it - beyond the diseased area.'
If you missed the Twitter cast, the hospital also posted a Storify link.
The live tweet is supposed to be an innovative educational exercise as Dr Patel, tweeted, 'an educational look into a common double bypass #surgery.'
