Don’t give your personal info to fake PlayStation 5 pre-order websites, warns Kaspersky

Although Sony is yet to bring its PS5 or PlayStation 5 gaming console to the hands of most gamers including those in India, some scammers are already trying to exploit the situation and gather credentials of those unaware. As found by Kaspersky cyber security company, phishers and scammers are becoming increasingly interested in using the launch of the new PlayStation to their advantage. Last month, the security firm found about 130 suspicious websites and web pages around the world related to PlayStation 5. 

They had ‘Playstation’ in their names and gave interested (and unaware) users a chance to pre order the PS5 console. For this it asked users for their personal information. Some webpages even offered purchasing the console at a lower price than the official retail cost, says Kaspersky. Some websites even mentioned that there was a special offer for the previous gen console – PlayStation 4 and said that the discount was there as the new console is now out.

“We would like to remind users that if something on the internet looks too good to be true, then it is probably a scam. Messages about sales and pre-orders should be checked on reliable sources and we advise against clicking on links from suspicious emails or messages on messengers and social networks. It is also recommended to install a security solution with up-to-date databases of phishing and spam resources,” said Kaspersky’s security expert Tatyana Sidorina.

It is worth adding that while Sony PS5 is already available in select countries, it is yet to release in India. Here’s the price has been revealed but there’s no clarity as to when these will reach the end users.
