Facebook starts rolling out Messenger Rooms globally

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last month announced the launch of Messenger Rooms, a 50-member video calling feature that would allow users to video call and share content with each other across other apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Portals without leaving those platforms. Now, the company has said that it has started rolling out Messenger Rooms to its users globally.

Facebook says that users can create Rooms from Messenger or directly from Facebook via News Feed, Groups and Events. They can also share links to invite anyone to join their Room even if they don’t have a Facebook account. This presumably would work via WhatsApp or Instagram. The company at the time of announcing the feature had said that Messenger Rooms integration would be coming to WhatsApp and its image-sharing app soon.

But there is a catch. While all users across the globe can create Rooms via Facebook Messenger, only the people living in the US can create Rooms via Facebook’s native app yet. The company said that it would be adding new features to Messenger Rooms in the coming months.

It is worth noting that apart from inviting anyone in their ‘Rooms’, users can also remove people if they wish to do so. “You can choose who can see and join your room or remove people from your room and lock the room if you don’t want anyone else to join,” Facebook’s VP of Messenger Stan Chudnovsky wrote in a blog post.

Messenger Rooms is available via the latest version of the company’s Facebook and Messenger apps on Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store. Users can also use this feature on their personal computers by downloading the latest version of the Messenger Desktop app from the Microsoft Store or the Mac App Store.
