Popular file-sharing site WeTransfer has reportedly been banned in India. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were asked by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to ban three website URLs which are all related to WeTransfer.
The order was sent out by DoT on May 18, according to a report by Mumbai Mirror. There’s however no clarification on why the ban on WeTransfer was issued by DoT. WeTransfer also acknowledged that users are unable to access its site.
In a reply to tweets by users on WeTransfer not working in India, the company said, “We have received reports that WeTransfer is being (partially) blocked in India. Our team is investigating the issue, we hope to have more details soon. In the meantime, the best workaround is to use a VPN service to access our site. Thanks for your patience!”
There hasn’t been any update from WeTransfer as yet. We can confirm though that the site is still not accessible on broadband networks like Spectra but it is working on ACT Fibernet. On mobile networks, the website is opening ono Airtel’s mobile network. For those who have to use WeTransfer the only option would be using a VPN service.
Other than the fact that a website has been banned in India, this case in particular is quite shocking since WeTransfer is being used by many as they work from home. It lets users share up to 2GB of files for free. There’s also a paid version as well that allows users to share files sized up to 20GB at once.
