Huawei is working on Galaxy Z Flip-like clamshell foldable phone

Apart from Samsung, Huawei was one of the first smartphone brands to embrace foldable phones. Even as Samsung has led with Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series, Huawei has just Mate X and Mate Xs foldable phones. The Chinese handset firm is now reportedly readying a comeback in the foldable phone race and this time with a clamshell phone akin to the Z Flip and Motorola Razr.

According to a design patent filed at China National Intellectual Property Office, Huawei is working on a flip-style foldable phone with a cover display and twin cameras at the back. The schematics reveal an uncanny resemblance to the Galaxy Z Flip. One of the most noticeable difference is that the cover display appears to be much larger than its counterparts.

The images do not feature any front-facing camera. It could mean the secondary display would act as the viewfinder for selfies, reports GSMArena. On the inside, the phone does not feature any module for selfies which is surprising. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip comes with a punch-hole camera at the top centre of the display (inside). Motorola Razr 2020 has a boat-shaped notch on the inner screen.

As of now, there is no word on when the Huawei foldable phone will launch. The patent itself was filed in April this year. A commercial device based on the patent concept appears to be far from getting unveiled.

As said earlier, Huawei had forayed into the foldable phone space with Mate X in 2019. Earlier this year, the company launched Mate Xs. Similar to the original version, Mate Xs opens like a book. The 5G-enabled Huawei Mate Xs comes with an 8-inch flexible screen. When folded, the display turns into a 6.6-inch primary screen and a 6.38-inch secondary display. The in-house Kirin 990 processor powers the foldable phone.
