KFC loves bundling gadgets with its meal boxes. Over the years, the company has launched power bank, one-click button, Bluetooth game controller, and even limited edition smartphones. Now, KFC has introduced a DIY drone which comes bundled with its Smoky Wings.

Called 'Kentucky Flying Object' or 'KFO', this drone can be controlled through your smartphone over the Wi-Fi.

But the drone meal box isn't available to everyone. It will be available to just 24 customers. However, KFC plans to launch the product on their official website next week.

What's in the box?

The top layer of the box is the cut out for the base of the drone. Opening the box, you will find different parts of the drone such as wings, motors and motherboard along with a 380mAh battery. There's also a manual on how to assemble and connect the drone.

How to assemble?

While you can refer to the video below to do it yourself, here's how it works.

Take the cut out of the base from the top layer of the meal box. Next you need to assemble the base first. You can do so by attaching fasteners to hold the frame together. Slip the four motor holders and securely fasten them to the ends of the frameworks.

Next, attach the circuit board to the base. Secure all four corners of the circuit board with the rubber bands (also bundled in the box). Now, place the four motor connectors through the four holders on the corners and fasten it. The connectors should be fastened to the PCB.

Attach the propellers shield to the motor. Place the A blades and the two B blades diagonally to each other. Slip the battery at the bottom of the base and connect it to the PCB. Add the KFC branding canopy on the top. You will notice the lights blinking, suggesting the drone power is on.

How to connect and fly

Download the drone controller app on your phone. The application is available for both Android and iOS. After having downloaded the application, connect the device through Wi-Fi. For that, go to Settings > choose KFC > enter password. Go back to the application, tap on the link button on the top left corner.

Go to in-app Settings to test the motors and calibrate the flight of the drone. The app features on-screen controllers that allow you to navigate the flight.

Takeaway

The drone actually works and does fly but you have to be very careful while assembling it. Attaching motor connectors to the holders could be tricky. We suggest you to place the wire inside the holder first and then put the connector. Or, you may end up damaging the wire as we did in our attempt in re-assembling the drone from scratch. Use the small wrench (also bundled in the box) to insert it. Also, make good use of the rubber bands to ensure the base structure is in place.
