After nearly two months of its run in theatres, Laal Singh Chaddha has now made its OTT release. The movie is an official remake of the 1994 comedy-drama movie, the Tom Hanks starrer Forrest Gump, and brings the theme of the movie to the Indian context. And filling the boots of Hanks is Aamir Khan with his own unique twist to the main character. The movie initially received positive reviews but did not do well at the box office. And if that kept you from watching the movie and judging for yourself whether it is good enough or not, now you can do so from the comfort of your home.
The movie revolves around a boy named Laal who was born with weak legs and struggled to walk without the support of metal braces. However, luck favors the boy and he grows up to reach miraculous heights. The story has a slice of life vibe to it, along with a sense of adventure and it never really loses its comedic appeal.
The movie marked Aamir Khan’s return to Bollywood after a 4-year hiatus. The movie also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, Naga Chaitanya in lead roles.
A part of the reason why the movie fared poorly was because of the online campaigns which asked people to boycott the movie. In the build up to the movie’s theatrical release various hashtags on Twitter could be seen trending that carried similar sentiments.
According to a ZeeBiz report, Aamir Khan also spoke on the subject matter in an interview where he said, “That Boycott Bollywood... Boycott Aamir Khan... Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha... I feel sad also because a lot of people who are saying this in their hearts believe am someone who doesn't like India... In their hearts they believe that... And that's quite untrue”.
But now, the movie is finally in the realm of OTT and that means every person can judge the merits of the movie themselves without needing to shell out money for the ticket, travel or sitting in a crowded hall.
The movie is out on Netflix. To announce the movie, Netflix posted a tweet saying, “Keep your p̶o̶p̶c̶o̶r̶n̶ golgappas ready because Laal Singh Chaddha is NOW STREAMING”. Do note, if you’re interested in watching this movie, you will need a subscription to the platform. The cheapest plan will cost you Rs. 149 and let you watch the movie on either smartphone or tablet at 480 pixels. If you want to watch it on your laptop or TV, you will have to buy the Rs. 199 subscription plan.
