Tales of social media accounts getting hacked in order to steal personal information to extort money out of the victim’s account is something we all have heard of. Here we are talking about a case, where a man from Uttar Pradesh has hacked a woman’s Instagram to post something strange on her account. The accused has been arrested for allegedly hacking a woman’s Instagram account and announcing on her profile that she was going to run away just before her wedding!

Ahead of her marriage, the parents of the woman from Mumbai's Goregaon east had posted her wedding invitation on social media as well as shared the soft copies to their friends and relatives via WhatsApp on June 10, HT report says. Shockingly, just a day after sharing the invitation card on social media, a woman noticed that her Instagram account had been hacked by an anonymous person.

Not just that, but the hacker also posted the invitation card while writing a message on it, “This woman is going to leave her groom and run away from her wedding.” Moreover, the accused himself claimed that she was known to him. As soon as the woman found out, she informed her parents and fiancee, who later approached the police to file a complaint.

Later, police identified the accused as Yakub Danial Katti from Uttar Pradesh. Strangely, he was a complete stranger to the girl and the family. Police have arrested the accused and now police are trying to find the motive behind the crime and how he got the contact details and Instagram ID information of the woman.

As can be seen, this problem can be faced by everyone. In case such an attack does happen on your Instagram account, here is what you can do.

What should you do if your Instagram account is hacked?

  • The first thing to do is to report it to the police or cyber-security cell to get immediate action taken against the crime. Meanwhile, you can request the recovery of your account from Instagram.
  • Instagram suggests that you should check your email account for a message from Instagram. If you received an email from security@mail.instagram.com, then you can undo this change by selecting the revert this change option.
  • You will need to request a login link from Instagram. It will send you a login link to your email address or phone number.
  • If you're able to log into your Instagram account, then you can change your password, turn on two-factor authentication for additional security or revoke access to any suspicious third-party apps.

Also, do be careful about whom you are sharing your Instagram account password with. Idea is to never do that. In case you have to do it, you should never share the password through mail, WhatsApp or on other social media accounts. It can be leaked easily from there.
